IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity, a unique number given to every smartphone, tablet, and other networking devices. It acts as a unique fingerprint for your device which helps network authorities to recognize and track your device. IMEI number is important for your device in the number of ways and is related to various things about your device.

What is IMEI Number?

IMEI number is a 15 digit unique code that acts like an ID card for your device. It is given to your device when it is manufactured and it stays the same forever which means it can't be changed. It should be noted no two devices have the same IMEI number, it is different for all devices.

Structure of IMEI Number

Before we discuss how IMEI is used let's know how it is structured.
The IMEI number is structured in the format of  AA-BBBBBB-CCCCCC-D where:
  1. Where the first six digits represent the model and maker's of the device.
  2. Digits from seven to eight tell us where the device is made.
  3. Digits from nine to fourteen helps us to identify your specific among all phones made by the same company.
  4. The last 15th digit is like a special code that makes sure that the IMEI number is correct, it is also known as the check digit.


How Is The IMEI Number Used

1. To Identify Your Phone

The IMEI number helps mobile network authorities know which phone is connecting to them. It's like an ID card for your phone, allowing it to access the network's services.

2. To Find Lost or Stolen Phones

As mentioned IMEI number is also used to track your devices. If you lose your phone or it gets stolen, you can use the IMEI number to help find it. You can tell your phone company or the police the IMEI number, and they can track your phone using it.

3. For Warranty and Repairs

When your phone needs repair under warranty, the IMEI number is used to check if it's a genuine phone and if the warranty is still valid. It helps make the repair process smoother.

4. Block The Stolen Phone

If a phone is reported stolen, its IMEI number is put on a list called the IMEI Blacklist. This list is used by mobile networks to block stolen phones from being used.

5. To Prevent Cloning

Cloning means copying the identity of another phone. The IMEI number prevents this because each phone has its own unique IMEI

How to Find IMEI of Your Phone

For Android Devices: Android users can follow the below steps to check the IMEI number:
  1. Go to the setting of your device.
  2. Click on the about phone section.
  3. Scroll down and check IMEI number option and click on it to check
  4. Alternatively, you can open the dial pad and type "*#06#"
For IOS Devices: IOS users can follow the below steps to check IMEI number:
  1. Go to settings and then general settings.
  2. Tap on the about phone section.
  3. Scroll down and you will find the IMEI number option.
  4. You can also quickly check the IMEI number on IOS by dialing "*#06#"
For Feature Phones: Here are the steps to find the IMEI number of feature phones:
  1. Open the dial pad of your phone
  2. Dial *#06# and you will find the IMEI number of your devices.

In short IMEI number is a special number that serves as an ID card for your devices. It can be used for various related things to your devices such as IMEI blacklisting, finding stolen devices, and for warranty and repair purposes.
